  1. Substack asks for one time fee for custom domain. Medium asks for monthly subscription.
  2. Substack allows Indian authors to earn money from Stripe. Medium don’t.
  3. Substack is reader funded which you find. Medium is reader funded which you and medium both finds.
  4. Substack url is weird, starts with p/. Medium is more like natural urls.
  5. Both promote themselves even when you have custom domain. This is the bargain for free hosting.
  6. Substack lured big writers in the beginning for growth. And so did Medium.
  7. Many big writers are leaving substack because they make more money now that they have more subscribers.
  8. Both let you export subscribers and content. But only Substack allows you to export reader subscription. At medium you don’t have any. All reader subscription belongs to them. If you leave, you lose.
  9. Medium is easy to start, UI is good. Substack was easy — now it has lots of bells and whistles.
  10. Both are nothing compared to buying your own hosting, custom domain and CMS, etc..But many beginners don’t have that kind of money to shell.

What’s your reason to write in Medium or Substack?
